I recently made a Beatles CD for someone who owned only a copy of the Beatles' 1. This was fun not only because it gave me an excuse to listen to a whole bunch of Beatles songs but also because I think that it's interesting as an academic exercise.

You know, I was watching Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines the other day, and I got to thinking. We only have so much time in this life. Why not live each day to the fullest?

And All Three Quiet Siege Fans Rejoiced! [27 May 2005|01:01am]
[ mood | music postin' ]

The newest Quiet Siege experiment gone horribly awry is completed: it's called "Scarecrow" and is made available on the internet here and here. At over five minutes long, it is my most epic track since my last one.

Don't end up like this girl. Don't put a scarecrow in your heart

Stolen from IMDB [13 Apr 2005|08:22pm]
[ mood | Caring ]

I found the following gem relating to the Care Bear Movie in the user comments of imdb:

"The 'Care' Bear movie. A dangerous plethora of twisted images from the American psyche are explored in this woodland repression vehicle. A dark dream of the degree to which writers in a modern society are prepared to disrupt reality in a bid to blindfold the new generation into the shooting gallery of puberty. Does the carebear have an armpit? The sanitation of children's programming has led to a generation befouled by mishap, angst and Celine Dion. The carebare is a eunuch, there is no personality, no real love or care. They simply serve as a scattered kaleidescope from which to view a one dimensional form of an emotion that short sighted writers have tried to simplify and compress to a generation of consequentially disenfranchised infants. Too much sugar leads to rot and as the Care Bears use their plateau to infect the 'savage' woodland creatures with their semi psychotic care ideology, the creatures lose all hope of developing any sense of identity. They find themselves crushed by the oppressive force of the 'care' and soon they too are carrying the Fascistic emblems, branded, on their bodies. All in all a terrifyingly shortsighted catapult into the ideological catacombs of children's broadgramming. Both chilling and powerful."

I'm not quite sure whether to admire the author for his/her hilariously over-the-top social criticism of the Care Bears, or whether to laugh at the author for going to one too many poetry slams.

A Rebirth [10 Apr 2005|08:40pm]
[ mood | okay ]

Hello. I haven't been doing much music stuff lately, but I've created a new group called "It's Dangerous to Go Alone! Take This." which is basically a vehicle for recording demos for new songs. I was going to call it "Our Princess is in Another Castle," but some obscure folk singer used that as an album name so I decided to be original and rip off the Legend of Zelda instead. I didn't spend a lot of time on these recordings (and I've since changed 95% of the lyrics for "Lover, Lover" since the recording) but you can get them if you want by clicking here.

My, my, my, it seems that over a month has passed since I've updated this journal. My excuse? A fair warning: the explanation for my month-long failure to blog is deep, dark, and will likely give you nightmares about graduate school applications a la [info]vitabeata. Ready? Here it is: I'm really, really boring. Aren't you glad you stuck around for that?

I've written some new songs so I may post one of those "N8's Artistic Endeavors" things again one of these days.

Valentine's Day [13 Feb 2005|03:55pm]
[ mood | ironic ]

I'm trying to plan my schedule for Valentine's Day. The theme is "activities that will repel the opposite sex." This is what I have on schedule so far:

11:30 AM - 2:45 PM Class (damn obligations)

3:30 PM - 4:30 PM I will play a sports video game. Women, I'm told, are not big fans of either video games or sports as a general rule.

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM I will play Advanced Dungeons & Dragons by myself, in my underwear, while watching anime. The effect that this will likely have on my future dating prospects is self-explanatory.

5:30 PM - 6:30 PM I will catalogue my Magic: The Gathering card collection while composing my first attempt at MC Hammer fan poetry.

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM I will play the tremendous video game Pirates!. This activity may not have a noticeable impact on the female population at large, but it will have a tremendous deterrent effect on a very specific segment of the female population.

7:30 PM - 11:30 PM ?????? I need your input!!

11:30 PM It's bedtime. And thankfully, I have my trusty stuffed animal Spike (from the Land Before Time) to keep all the boogeywomen away.

It's Official: No New Quiet Siege for a Long, Long Time [16 Jan 2005|10:26pm]
[ mood | obviously frustrated ]

It's rather unbelievable.

First, let me get you up to speed on my recording issues. My laptop's volume only goes up so high, so I had been in the habit of plugging in some old speakers from my old computer. Why do I need more volume? Because if I turn up the volume on my recording program too high, the sound will clip which makes mixing effectively impossible. In the past, however, I could easily solve this problem by plugging in those old speakers--I could up my laptop to full volume and kick up the juice the requisite amount with the speakers.

Well, my speakers mysteriously failed upon arrival to my lovely new residence on Lake Street. I took my beloved electronic relics to Radio Shack where a young gentleman unsuccessfully attempted to solve my problem via a new AC Adapter. Foolishly believing my speakers to be easily replaceable, I turned to Ebay, ordering what I believed would be fine stand-ins. Unfortunately these speakers (which came with an AC Adapter the size of my head) were just a scosh shy of lending me the volume that I need.

I attempted to solve my troubles by asking for new speakers from Santa, and Santa delivered. Finally, problems were solved! But wait! When I plugged in these speakers and cranked up the volume, the music clipped. That had never happened before! I tried plugging those speakers into my Ebay speakers to see if maybe I could get the needed power from their combined efforts, but that was not to be.

I'm seriously at a loss at what to do. I can't simply keep buying up speakers that may or may not solve the problem. My only thought now is to wait until I have some serious lawyer money so I can upgrade my system entirely.

The bottom line: no new Quiet Siege until summer at the earliest.
